Dr Synda Obaji is an Assistant Professor at Birmingham Law School. Her research relates to environmental justice and sustainability, environmental governance issues, and human rights; and her work on Internal Displacement in Nigeria has been cited by the United Nations Human Rights Council.

Biography

Synda graduated as valedictorian from the University of Calabar, Nigeria, where she obtained her law degree with First Class Honours. She holds an LLM (with Distinction) in Environmental Law and Policy from the University of Kent and a PhD in law from the University of Birmingham. Synda is a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria and a former Commonwealth Scholar (2013-2014).

Synda taught law at the University of Calabar, Nigeria, and represented clients in Nigerian courts prior to joining Birmingham Law School. Before taking up the role of Assistant Professor, she was a Teaching Associate and a Teaching Fellow. She is an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Research

Synda’s research interests are in the fields of Environmental Law, Energy Law and Human Rights. Her doctoral research examined the procedural foundations upon which environmental injustices are formed through the instrumentality of environmental impact assessments. Her current research is concerned with the relationship between human rights and the environment.
