Dr Alana Farrell is a Teaching Fellow and socio-legal researcher. Her work focuses on the relationships between law and information creation and dissemination. Her particular focus is on gender-based and reproductive healthcare.

Biography

Dr Alana Farrell joined Birmingham Law School in 2017 as a PhD researcher. Her thesis examined anti-abortion information regulations in Ireland. During her research, Alana was also part of the team at Birmingham who researched the impact of restrictive abortion laws for the WHO. This work underpinned a number of recommendations on abortion regulations in the WHO’s ‘Abortion Care Guideline’ (2022). 

Alana has taught on the criminal law module in Birmingham Law School in 2018. She completed the Higher Education Futures Institute’s ‘Introduction to Academic Practice for Doctoral Researchers’ with the ‘Horizon Award’ in 2019. She is now an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Authority. She continues at Birmingham as a Teaching Fellow on the ‘Law, Justice and Ethics’ and ‘International Criminal Law’ modules. She is also a co-coordinator of the internal debating competitions in CEPLER.

Research

Dr Alana Farrell’s previous research considers how law impacts information creation and dissemination and if information availability influences law-making. Her PhD focus was on abortion information in Ireland. Since her PhD, Alana has focused upon the legacies of censorship in law-making in Ireland. She is also planning projects to examine the role of law and information in protecting access to healthcare in gender and reproductive spaces beyond abortion.
