I was educated in Spain, Italy and Canada. Before joining the department I taught at the University of Ottawa in Canada, King´s College London and Goldsmiths University of London.

I would welcome graduate students wishing to work on any area within modern Hispanic literature and intellectual and cultural history or any other of my research interests.

My main research interests are in modern Latin American culture, literature and Intellectual History. I am interested in the relationship between literature and power, exile and literature, literature and human rights, the effects of censorship on culture, ideas of the nation and citizenship in Latin American and the Hispanic world. In this areas I have published on Mario Vargas Llosa, José Carlos Mariátegui, José Martí, Antonio Cornejo Polar’s notion of ‘heterogeneity’, Ramón J. Sender amongst others.

I also have an interest in Hispanic poetry and literary and cultural translation. In this area I have published on the Spanish poet Fernando Ortiz, and have worked on the poetry of José Martí and Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer.

I have organised several international conferences with colleagues, most recently ‘Geographies of Exile’ in 2008 and ‘Trans-Actions: Dos siglos de intercambios culturales entre América latina y España’ in 2010.

I am member of the MLA, Canadian Association of Hispanists, LASA, MHRA and a patron of the Instituto Internacional de Literatura Iberoamericana. I have peer reviewed for the Bulletin of Hispanic Studies, Bulletin of Spanish Studies, Modern Language Review, Revista Iberoamericana and Mosaic.

I am programme lead for Hispanic Studies and School Extenuating Circumstances Officer. I am also the Erasmus academic coordinator in Hispanic Studies.
