Dr Sardeli, trained as an exercise physiologist, research about the clinical benefits and risks of different types of physical exercise on older adults with and without chronic diseases.

She became recognised for her expertise in systematic review and meta-analysis, due to the simple method that she developed to allow researchers and students to produce their own research papers in a time efficient manner.

She is currently investigating to which extend what is known by ageing of the immune system could be just an effect of reduction in physical activity with ageing. In parallel, she also investigates the potential benefits of exercise during upper respiratory infections.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Gerontology, University of Campinas, Campinas, Brazil, 2019
  • MSc in Gerontology, University of Campinas, Campinas, Brazil, 2015
  • BA in Physical Education, METROCAMP, Campinas, Brazil, 2010

Biography

Amanda Sardeli graduated in Physical Education in 2010, and since then has collaborated in the Laboratory of Exercise Physiology (FISEX) at the School of Physical Education of UNICAMP (Brazil). Along her Master and PhD studies, at the School of Medical Sciences (UNICAMP), in Gerontology she also participated in international exchanges, undergoing leadership training in Viborg (Denmark), a research laboratory internship in KU Leuven (Belgium) and one-year exchange doctorate program at the Laboratory of Human Physiology at UIC (Chicago-USA). Meanwhile, she also became a specialist in systematic review and meta-analysis, supporting other researchers in the field.

Now as a Newton International Postdoctoral Fellow, she is investigating the effects of exercise on immune system and cell senescence at the Institute of Inflammation and Ageing, in the University of Birmingham (UK). In parallel, she is still collaborating in Brazil and teaching her practical systematic review and meta-analysis course, in CPD format, at The University of Birmingham.

Research

Dr Sardeli has a broad interest about what are the ideal exercise training protocols to improve health outcomes in a variety of special older adult populations. She is now focusing in the older adults immunity, looking for how physical activity can delay the ageing of immune system as well as affect systemic ageing.

Given the complexity and heterogeneity of older adults’ health, a lot of Amanda's previous work has been done by integrative analysis of the literature (by systematic review and meta-analysis) and testing exercise interventions. She believes there is a huge number of good quality evidence on scientific journals that never reach society or the public health policies because even the researchers do not know how to handle this excess of information. By organizing this information, it is possible to design much better projects and improve the precision of the research hypothesis. Because of the development of practical teaching methods to instruct researchers and students, she became a specialist and have been supporting other researchers in the field to build their meta-analyses.

Current projects:

  • Understanding the influence of physical activity on ageing processes (Newton International fellowship – The Royal Society)
  • Does physical activity improve T cell function by improving T-cell mitochondria biogenesis and its metabolism in older adults?
  • How exercise influence symptoms duration and severity during viral infections (University of Campinas, Brazil)

Other activities

Research support for Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.
