Susan Quick is a multi-disciplined part-time doctoral student researching in the fields of ecohydrology and plant science with Birmingham Institute for Forest Research (BIFoR). A retired chartered engineer and safety practitioner she has more than 40 years industrial work experience mainly in the rail industry. In addition to academic research she undertakes a range of citizen science volunteering tasks including monitoring tree health for Observatree and butterfly transects for Derbyshire Butterfly Conservation.

Biography

More than 40 years industrial working experience mainly in the rail industry. I am now retired but in addition to my academic research I undertake a range of citizen science volunteering tasks including Observatree (tree pests and diseases) and butterfly transects for Derbyshire Butterfly Conservation.  

Doctoral research

Research

As a multi-disciplined part-time doctoral student with previous qualifications in engineering, I am now researching in the fields of ecohydrology and plant science with Birmingham Institute for Forest Research (BIFoR) and wish to share my early findings so as to become known in my field. 

For my doctoral research I carried out my field work and data collection at BIFoR free air carbon dioxide enrichment experiment (FACE), which is a long term but time limited experiment, to examine the effects of future levels of CO2 on mature temperate deciduous forests. Our interim results need to be disseminated early to inform policy regarding forest and their part in climate change mitigation.
