Dr. Nilanjan Mukherjee is a Research Fellow in Power Electronics within the School of Electronic, Electrical, and Systems Engineering at the University Of Birmingham. He is also the member of Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education.

His main research interests include the role of power electronics in energy storage, hybrid energy system integration for transport and utility grid applications with a particular attention to multi-modular and modular multilevel type of power electronic converters.

Biography

Dr. Nilanjan Mukherjee received MEng. Degree (First Class) in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, India in 2009.

From 2009 to 2011 he was the Engineering Research Centre (ERC) of Tata Motors Ltd as a development manager where he was involved in power electronic converter and control strategy development for energy storage integration in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) drive train.

He joined the Power Engineering and Power Electronics (PEPE) group at the University of Aston, Birmingham, in 2011 where he completed his PhD in Power Electronics in 2014.

He was a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Aston University following his PhD. He is currently working as a Research Fellow in Electrical Power & Control group within the School of Electronic, Electrical, and Systems Engineering at the University Of Birmingham.

He is a member of IEEE and the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IES).

RESEARCH AREAS

  • Multi-modular and modular multilevel power electronic interfaces for rapid transportation such as, Railway, Locomotive, Electric/Hybrid Vehicle (EV/HEV) traction systems, and utility grid systems          
  • Power conversion systems, energy management strategies to integrate energy storage and hybrid energy systems such as, hybrid batteries, battery with ultra-capacitor (super-capacitor), fuel cells
  • Converter control methods and associated stability studies in hybrid energy systems and energy storage integrations
  • Rapid prototyping systems, hardware-in-loop (HIL) systems and real time simulations for power electronic applications
