Dr Nan Chen is a Teaching Fellow in the School of Engineering at the University of Birmingham. As an Associate Fellow of the Advanced Higher Education, he aims to carry out high-quality teaching activities. His main teaching area is within the MSc Programme - Electrical Power Systems, and his research interests include HVDC modelling and control. He has five-year working experience in industry and was awarded the Intermediate Engineer Qualification Certificate before joining the University of Birmingham.

Biography

Dr Chen received the B.Eng. degree in electrical engineering from the Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China, in 2012, and the MSc. degree and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Birmingham, Birmingham, U.K., in 2018 and 2022, respectively.

From 2012 to 2017, he worked for Shanghai Electric Machinery Co., Ltd., one of the largest electric machinery manufactories in China in roles of designing and manufacturing large motors and generators including wind and hydro generators. He was awarded the Intermediate Engineer Qualification Certificate in 2017.

From 2019 to 2022, He worked as a postgraduate teaching assistant and was qualified the Associate Fellowship of the Advanced Higher Education (AFAHE), UK, and was awarded the Horizon Award for Postgraduate Teachers in 2022.

He also participated in several research projects during the PhD:

  • Key researcher (2021-2022) in the collaborative project “Key Technologies of Flexible LCC Converter with Controllable Capacitors” between the University of Birmingham and C-EPRI under grant SGNRPG00WZQT2100564A.
  • Research Assistant (2019-2020) in the project ‘A Proof of Concept - Flexible LCC HVDC Technology led by EPSRC.

Dr Chen is now a teaching fellow in the School of Engineering, University of Birmingham. His main teaching area is within the MSc Programme - Electrical Power Systems, and his research interests include HVDC modelling and control.
