Professor Sawada, based at Komazawa University (Tokyo, Japan), is a leading figure in the study of African history and literature in Japan and works on West African print culture. She is a close collaborator of University of Birmingham Professor emerita Dame Karin Barber FBA, and is currently translating Professor Barber’s History of African Popular Culture into Japanese.
