Ela Claridge is an Emeritus Professor of Medical Image Analysis. She established a successful Medical Imaging and Image Interpretation Group which is internationally known for the development of novel computational image analysis methods and non-invasive light-based imaging. Her interdisciplinary research involves collaborations extending to medicine, biosciences, physics of image formation and human visual perception. She was a founding member of the Doctoral Training Centre PSIBS (Physical Sciences of Imaging in the Biomedical Sciences) which provided training for over 50 PhD students.

Professor Claridge has published over 150 peer-reviewed papers. She is an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging and an editorial board member of Medical Image Analysis. Her research on skin imaging has led to a commercially successful skin cancer screening device, the SIAscope, which exploits a physics-based analysis of multispectral image data. Similar methods are being extended to retinal imaging in the context of age-related macular degeneration.
