Matthew has worked in pharmacy for over 20 years, starting with a role as a Healthcare Assistant for Lloyds Pharmacy. Matthew developed with the company to qualify as a Pharmacy Technician and went on to study Pharmacy at Keele University whilst working for Lloyds, Cornwell’s Chemists and Asda. Matthew later worked for Lloyds as a Pharmacist, manager and area governance lead. During Matthew’s pre-registration training, he was recognised by his peers and was voted runner-up for the Pre-registration Pharmacist of the Year award within Lloyds Pharmacy.
The next step of Matthew’s career saw him move into academia as a Lecturer in Pharmacy Practice at Keele University. In addition to teaching on the MPharm programme, Matthew supported the Nursing and Midwifery, Forensic Science, and Health Foundation Year programmes. During his time at Keele, Matthew was involved in the development of an avatar-based virtual patient, which was used as an educational tool to support students and healthcare professionals develop their consultation skills when providing lifestyle advice.
Alongside his teaching role, Matthew took on a part time role as Head of the Pharmacy Department for two Ramsay Health Care UK private hospitals. During his time with Ramsay, Matthew introduced initiatives to improve the Pharmacy service and effective running of the hospital that were rolled out across the group.
Matthew’s main areas of teaching are law, ethics and clinical pharmacy. Matthew’s interests include the advertising and marketing of medicines, governance, and gastroenterology.
Alongside working at University of Birmingham, Matthew is a volunteer with Crohn’s & Colitis UK, working as a Medical Reviewer.
