Karen holds a degree in Communication Processes. She joined the University of Birmingham in September 2001. Karen is the first point of contact with the Interactive Studies Unit (ISU) if you have a training need to discuss or would like to book simulated patients/role players. As well as co-ordinating the role play team Karen is also involved with recruitment, training and facilitating work. Karen has been one of the leads at the University of Birmingham setting up the Clinical Skills Programme for the medical and PA students - these include ACEs (Associate Clinical Educators), life models and Gynaecological Teaching Associates (GTAs).
Karen is a member of the executive committee for the Association of Simulated Practice in Healthcare (ASPiH). Karen represents the methodology of human simulation within this group and she is also leading on the association’s special interest groups (SIGs).
Karen is a member of ASPE (Association of Standardised Patient Educators) and is past Chair of the International Committee. Karen is a member of the Certification Committee for the Society for Simulation in Healthcare.
