Biography

Dr Patel graduated from University of Cambridge with a Masters in Natural Sciences, having completed an additional subinternship in paediatric cardiovascular disease at Harvard University. Specialist training included a NIHR-funded Academic Clinical Fellowship (ACF), PhD in vascular biology and PGD in Health Research. His subspecialty interests are in heart failure, cardio-oncology and complex devices after training in expert centres including Wythenshawe and Papworth. He also has a fervent interest in medical education, having completed a PGC in Clinical Education and previously acted as Associate College Tutor for the Royal College of Physicians (RCP). These contributions have culminated in appointment as a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). Prior to relocation, he was a Visiting Lecturer at the Leeds Institute of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine (LICAMM).

Dr Patel has authored over 100 publications and abstracts, and has recently written ‘Cardiology at its Core’ which is scheduled for publication by Wiley-Blackwell in 2023.

Dr Patel plans to undertake supervision of MD/PhD students, with research related to his interests in heart failure and complex devices.

Research

Dr Patel is currently a local investigator for the UK Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction (UK HFpEF) registry, a multi-centre collaboration seeking to develop a characterised cohort of 10,000 patients with HFpEF and improve their clinical outcomes.

He is also involved in a multi-centre study to assess quality of outpatient care in patients with chronic heart failure, when compared with ESC Heart Failure quality indicators (audit code: CARMS-18485).

Dr Patel also has an interest in data analytics to inform clinical decision-making. He is currently undertaking systematic reviews to explore longitudinal impact of a) cardiotoxic agents on cardiovascular outcomes and b) SGLT2 inhibitors on renal function.
