Clare Herd is a systematic reviewer working predominantly in the areas of Parkinson’s disease and headache. Her main responsibility is the undertaking of systematic literature searching to identify existing evidence as a basis for development of clinical trial proposals, grant applications and synthesis of the worldwide research evidence.

Biography

Clare's background is in Chemistry and she achieved her undergraduate degree in 2005, followed by her PhD in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Leeds, under Dr Julie Fisher researching the non-duplex folding states of the telomeric region of human DNA. She has worked for the last seven years as a systematic reviewer. Most of her work has used Cochrane methods to produce comprehensive reviews of interventions for neurological conditions. More recently she has been involved in processing qualitative data in the form of over 3500 responses to a patient and healthcare worker survey to determine research priorities for Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension.

Teaching

Clare teaches the Reviewing the Evidence module on the Research Methods Course run by BCTU three times a year.

Research Activity

Migraine: Currently working on reviewing the evidence for botulinum toxin for migraine prophylaxis.
Parkinson’s disease: Currently working on reviewing the evidence for anti-depressive therapies for people with Parkinson’s disease. Recent work includes reviews of physiotherapy and of speech and language therapy interventions for people with Parkinson’s disease.
