Dr Sandeep Potluri is a BHP Clinician-Scientist in the Institute of Cancer and Genomic Sciences at the University of Birmingham and a Consultant in Paediatric Haematologist/ Stem Cell Transplantation at Birmingham Children’s Hospital. 

His interests are in paediatric congenital conditions that confer a propensity to leukaemia, therapeutic vulnerabilities in Acute Myeloid Leukaemia and ways of optimising conditioning therapies for allogeneic stem cell transplantation.

Biography

Following graduation from the University of Cambridge, Dr Sandeep Potluri joined the Academic Foundation Programme in Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals/ Newcastle University where he worked on identifying novel driver mutations and also the epigenomic profiling of paediatric tumours. 

Dr Potluri then moved to Birmingham as an NIHR funded Academic Clinical Fellow in Haematology. He obtained a Medical Research Council funded Clinical Research Training Fellowship which allowed him to undertake a PhD in Professor Constanze Bonifer’s lab in the Institute of Cancer and Genomic Sciences here at the University of Birmingham. Dr Potluri investigated how transcription factor networks are corrupted in Acute Myeloid Leukaemia with a specific focus on WT1 and the AP-1 family of transcription factors. He has also been looking into characterising leukaemic stem cells and identifying therapeutic vulnerabilities. 

Dr Potluri has also spent periods of time at Stanford University, USA and at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, USA working with the oncology and leukaemia services and with the epigenomics program.

Following completion of his clinical training, he was appointed as a BHP Clinician Scientist and as a consultant in Paediatric Haematology/ Stem Cell Transplantation.

Research

Dr Sandeep Potluri is interested in congenital leukaemia pre-disposition syndromes in children and how they give rise to acute leukaemia, whether that be through corruption of transcription factor networks or through disturbance of the DNA damage response. 

Many of these children have significant toxicity to chemotherapy or stem cell transplant conditioning therapies and Dr Potluri is looking into synthetic lethality approaches, so that methods using reduced doses of chemotherapy may be utilised. 

Dr Potluri works on primary patient bone marrow, fibroblasts, LCLs and also leukaemic cell lines derived from patients.
