Michael Newnham is an Associate Professor and Consultant in Respiratory Medicine.

Michael’s research interests are predominately focused on pulmonary vascular diseases including pulmonary embolism and chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension. He has experience in research methods that include genomics, big data, biostatistics, clinical research trials and risk prediction modelling.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Medicine 2019, University of Cambridge
  • PGCert in Medical Education 2011, University of Birmingham
  • MRCP 2009, Royal College of Physicians
  • MBChB 2006, University of Birmingham
  • MSc in Pathological Studies 2005, University of Birmingham

Biography

Michael graduated from the University of Birmingham in 2006 and then worked in the West Midlands and commenced Respiratory Medicine training in 2011. He undertook his PhD at Cambridge University from 2016-2019 investigating genetic associations in chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension. He spent several years working in the pulmonary vascular disease’s unit at Papworth Hospital where he retains strong collaborative research links.

Michael has worked at the University of Birmingham since September 2018, as a Clinical Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and now Associate Professor as part of Professor Alice Turner’s research group.
