Tiffany is a research fellow in global health with a focus in epidemiology and health systems research using both quantitative and qualitative methods. She has worked on various projects in Brazil, China, Nepal, Tanzania, The Gambia, Sri Lanka and the UK. Tiffany’s PhD was focused on the epidemiology of and health services for people living with HIV and comorbidities of non-communicable diseases including mental health conditions. Tiffany has a strong interest in improving the health and wellbeing of people often marginalised and disadvantaged (e.g. people living with HIV) and preventing and reducing the global burden of poor mental health.

Tiffany has an active role at the institute which includes small group teaching for undergraduates on the public health and epidemiology modules, supervising masters and PhD students, leading research tasters for 1st year medical students, and being a member of the Institute’s People and Culture Working Group.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Applied Health Research 2024. University of Birmingham
  • Masters in Global Health 2016. University of Birmingham
  • BSc in Psychology 2013

Biography

Tiffany completed her Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Minnesota in 2013. During this time, she worked as a part-time research assistant in the TRiCAM Laboratory in the Department of Psychology (i.e. Translational Research in Cognitive and Affective Mechanisms) on projects aiming to understand the decision-making processes of people diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. After graduating, Tiffany took time off to travel solo through various African and Southeast Asian countries.

In 2016, Tiffany completed her master’s in global health from the University of Birmingham. She then worked as a senior research associate for Picker Institute Europe, a non-profit focused on person-centred care. She worked closely with the NHS, CQC and advisory groups and led national studies aimed to monitor and benchmark person-centred quality of care for mental health, emergency, inpatient, maternity and cancer care in the UK.

Tiffany began working for the University of Birmingham on a casual contract in 2018; she worked with Dr Semira Manaseki-Holland on various maternal and child health research projects in LMICs. Tiffany joined the University in 2020 as a full-time research fellow, first working with the Brazilian and Sri Lankan partners on the NIHR Global AF Group with Prof G Neil Thomas (Co-PI) among many others at the University. Tiffany then worked on various projects in LMICs regarding critical care, primary healthcare, maternity care and gender-based violence.

Tiffany is in the process of applying for a post-doc fellowship and grant applications to further her research on HIV and associated comorbidities including mental health in the UK and LMIC settings.
