'Studying these areas in higher education allowed me to have a head start entering the world of golf.'
Chris Jones
Current role
I am now a PGA Professional working at Almouj Golf in Muscat, Oman. After spending two years in Safaa Golf Club, Saudi Arabia, I moved to Oman to take on another new and exciting development. Both of my positions have been involved with pre opening of the facilities, which requires a lot of detail to get a project off the ground and running. The majority of my time has been spent developing the golf operation, however I am also part of a team responsible for delivering golf lessons to our members and guests. .
Outline the course you studied at the University of Birmingham and how it benefited you?
I studied Applied Golf Management Studies at the University of Birmingham. The course covered a number of subject areas including sports science, psychology, introduction to business, event management, material studies and golf coaching through the PGA. Studying these areas in higher education allowed me to have a head start entering the world of golf as the majority of PGA professionals do not have the same academia behind them.
This was the only course of its kind.
How did you find your first year in Birmingham?
Birmingham is a great city with plenty of things to do and see. University is a great opportunity to make new friends and learn how to stand on your own two feet so to speak. The first year in Birmingham was probably the best for me.
How did going to University as a whole benefit you?
As well as providing me with an Hons Degree, I believe University and moving away from home really gave me the opportunity to start off my career as I mean to go on.
How did you find campus life?
Birmingham campus was definitely the best that I saw when visiting prospective courses. The state of the art facilities really were a great hub for self learning.
Did you join any student societies during your studies?
There were lots of opportunities to take up new sports and be part of a club. I was a member of the golf team for all three years, which provided great opportunities to play competitively around the UK.
Any tips to pass on to students thinking of coming here?
Work hard in all three years. You want to get in right the first time.
What are your aspirations for the future?
I am aspiring to be a Project Manager/ General Manager of a high end golf facility.
