'Are we there yet? 50 years of "fixing" social care'

As HSMC celebrates its 50th anniversary, this seminar explored longstanding attempts to ‘fix’ adult social care, from when HSMC opened its doors in 1972 to current debates about funding reform, national care services and health and social care integration.

In the process, it touched on the ways in which adult social care and joint working became such key themes of HSMC’s work (despite starting life as more of a ‘Health’ Services Management Centre), and how different elements of policy and practice have changed (or not) over this 50 year period.

Catherine Needham is Professor of Public Policy and Public Management at the University of Birmingham, and a member of the NIHR School for Social Care Research leadership team.

Jon Glasby is a social worker by background, Professor of Health and Social care at the University of Birmingham, and Director of IMPACT – the UK centre for implementing evidence in adult social care.

Peter Hay CBE is former Director of Adult Social Services in Birmingham and North-East Lincolnshire, a former President of the Association of Directors of Adult Social Services (ADASS) and has over 25 years in a range of social care leadership positions.
