Fourth year Pharmacy Student Hyuk Chang from South Korea has been talking about his experiences at the University of Birmingham and how it felt coming to Birmingham as an international student.
Why did you apply to do your chosen course in the UK and specifically at the University of Birmingham?
I chose pharmacy because of my interest in healthcare and the UK for its renowned education system. The University of Birmingham stood out for its excellent pharmacy program and supportive environment for international students. Also, it has a large campus, a rich history, and a high reputation globally.
How easy has it been to meet new people and make friends while you have been here?
It's been easier than I expected. Everyone is welcoming, and there are many clubs and societies to join, which helped me meet people with similar interests. Perhaps because the UK is a multi-cultural country with diverse ethnicities, my friends took good care of me without discrimination, even though I was of a different race and not fluent in English. They encouraged me a lot. However, just like in any other country including home country, to make new friends, it requires an effort to open my heart first and reach out.
What has been your social highlight at the University of Birmingham?
Joining the Pharmacy Society was a highlight. It allowed me to connect with peers in my field and participate in various fun and educational events. There were many events, and I was impressed by when the juniors actively approached the seniors, they provide a lot of academic help and support based on their experience.
Can you summarise your overall experience as a current student so far?
As a current student at the University of Birmingham, my experience so far has been both challenging and rewarding. Initially, I felt a mix of excitement and nervousness about starting university, especially adapting to a new country and its education system. Studying and living far from home has its challenges, like missing my family and the comfort of familiar surroundings. However, it also offers me the chance to grow independently and immerse myself in a new culture.
