Felicity's journey to nursing began as a child with her parents who were a nurse and a doctor. A future in healthcare felt like an obvious path for her to follow, to join her parents in providing the best possible frontline care for the population.
Felicity chose to study at the University of Birmingham in 2019 and began her studies at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Felicity worked alongside her studies as a nurse in a high dependency unit and sought as many experiences as possible to broaden her skills and experience. Through securing multiple work experience opportunities, Felicity found a passion for ensuring workforce wellbeing. Felicity has also undertaken an extended literature review in this area (now being prepared for publication) as a demonstration of her commitment to this specific field of practice. She has also won the University’s Liebling Prize given to outstanding students for this work.
“Some of my favourite days are when I am on the wards with the patients and I feel confident to be there which stems from my learning at University.”
Felicity, also worked as a Research Assistant for a funded NHS England project on suicide prevention in the workplace alongside her studies. She has worked as part of local Integrated Care Systems on various projects and volunteered at Health Education England to work with the REPAIR team on ‘Love our Learners’. She is also a member of Chief Nursing Officers National Student Shared Council and through this work presented at webinars with leading professionals on the transition to registered practice. As is her specialism, Felicity’s presentation focused specifically around wellbeing and mental health. She is committed to continuing this work when she becomes a fully registered Nurse.
“The support from the lecturers at Birmingham is great! They have helped me build my confidence and learn the basic skills, laying foundations to apply theory into real life practice.”
Felicity was nominated for the 2023 Student Nursing Times Awards for Outstanding Contribution to Student Affairs and Student Adult Nurse of the Year. These nominations placed Felicity amongst the 10 other student nurses across the country being shortlisted for each category, an incredible achievement and recognition of her work. Felicity now also writes blogs for the NHS student hub, demonstrating the outstanding qualities of student nurses at Birmingham, inspiring the next generation to study and join the Nursing profession.
