Nursing student selected for England Deaf Rugby 7's
Rory Fisher, 2nd Year BNurs Nursing (Adult) student has been selected to represent England in the first ever World Deaf Rugby 7’s competition. Rory will make up the 12-man squad travelling to Sydney, Australia in April to play in the International World Deaf Rugby 7’s Tournament.
Last year Rory was invited to an open training session at Stowe School in Buckinghamshire where the team train. From this session, he was asked to attend a trial from which he was then selected to be in the 23-man squad to face New Zealand in a 3-Test Series in November 2017. The team went on to whitewash the All-Blacks (New Zealand) 3-0.
Rory has been playing rugby since he was 8, playing school rugby, club rugby and representative rugby. On his selection, he says “being selected to represent my country is the pinnacle of my rugby career so far, but being selected to play alongside some of the most talented deaf rugby players in the world is just as much an honour!”
Speaking on balancing course work with rugby he says “I would encourage any student to take up some sort of sport or extra-curricular activity, whether that be rugby, swimming, or even joining a random society that appeals to you. For me, it has always been important to separate myself from uni work from time to time to help me empty my head and reset my focus. Rugby gives me that opportunity to reset and come back to my studies focused and fresh-headed. “
