Development of a person-centred care model for older people in long-term care facilities in Thailand

Summary

Background

The old population in the world has increased significantly. Most of them have health conditions and cannot take care of themselves. Some older people live alone or live with their family, but the family members can not take care of them when they have serious health problems. Therefore, older people and their family have to consider long-term care settings. However, there is no model of care for older people in long-term care facilities in Thailand to improve the quality of care.

Aim/objectives

To develop a person-centred care model for Thai older persons residing in long-term care facilities.

Methods

A qualitative approach (semi-structured interviews and focus groups) will be used to explore the needs and experiences of older people in long-term care facilities in Thailand and identify the essential elements of a person-centred care models for older persons from the viewpoints of the key stakeholders including residents in long-term care facilities, family caregivers, and healthcare providers. Framework analysis will be used for data analysis. Finally, we will build consensus on the elements of a person-centred care model using a nominal group technique.  Expected outcomes: This study will develop a person-centred care model for older people in long-term care facilities in Thailand, which could be used to improve quality of care in long-term care facilities and inform policy.
