Student Profile – Lydia Wilson
When I first started at Birmingham Medical School I, like so many others before me, was overwhelmed by the size, the history and the bustle. It was all so new and unfamiliar, but also exciting as I realised that this would be my home for the next five years. Since that initial feeling of being slightly intimidated I've realised how incredible it is to be on the inside of such a world renowned school.
My favourite part of the course has probably been going into hospitals in third year and having the freedom to explore my own particular areas of interest. I've seen neurosurgery, hip replacements as well as a birth of a baby which were all incredible to watch and a real honour to be a part of. I believe that allowing students time to explore their own topics of interest and develop in areas of their choosing is something that Birmingham Medical School does really well and sets it aside from other universities.
The biggest challenges are always around exam time. There is a lot of work to do and exams will always be stressful but finishing them always has an enormous feeling of relief and satisfaction.
There’s not really a typical week at Birmingham! Each week there's a different MedSoc event on (a show or a concert or sports fixture or social) and you never know what kind of thing you'll be getting up to in hospital until you arrive! There's never a boring week here considering how many societies, clubs and events are always on to get involved with.
I love the city of Birmingham so much, it has such a lovely atmosphere of new opportunities and developments. The canals are beautiful to run or cycle along, the city centre has all the shopping you could ever dream of and of course Cadbury World means that you'll never miss that sugar fix!
I would tell my first-year self to relax and enjoy it. These are going to be the best times of your life so - once in a while - sit back and appreciate where you are and how hard you worked to get here.
If I had to sum up my time at university so far, I would say ‘hectic’, ‘exciting’ and ‘adventure’.
