Professor Peter Weissberg CBE graduated with a Medicine degree from the University of Birmingham in 1976 and an MD degree in Medicine in 1985.
Peter has enjoyed a long and successful career, initially training as a clinical cardiologist before being appointed lecturer in Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Birmingham. In 1988, Peter was appointed Honorary Consultant Cardiologist at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge.
In 2002, Peter undertook the post as Medical Research Council Travelling Fellow at the Baker Medical Research Institute and Alfred Hospital in Melbourne. Following this, he was appointed as the first British Heart Foundation Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Cambridge, where he established the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine. In 2004, he became Medical Director of the British Heart Foundation.
We awarded Peter with the honorary degree of Doctor of Science (DSc) in 2013. He was also a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences.
His research interests have focused on vascular biology and, in particular, the cell and molecular biology of vascular smooth muscle cells in atherosclerosis. He was also involved in developing clinical imaging techniques to characterise atherosclerotic plaque composition in patients at risk of stroke.
In January 2017, Peter was awarded a CBE in the New Year's Honours List for services to medical research and cardiovascular health.
