Professor Ed Rochead: The best engineering and physical science ever

As part of the Inaugural Lecture Series of the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences, join Professor Ed Rochead as he delivers his inaugural lecture.

Abstract: In this talk, Professor Rochead will explore the ways in which engineering and physical sciences have impacted people, society and the planet over the last 400 or so years. He will use a range of case studies from this period to illustrate some of the key developments, including in fields such as defence, security, communications, and energy. Professor Rochead will conclude by deciding which one has had the most impact, and done the most good, for society, and there will be time for discussion and or questions.

About the speaker: Ed is a career Government Mathematician, having joined MOD as a mathematical modeller in 1998 and having carried out a range of roles in science and technology for UK Government since, currently a Research Commissioner in MOD, and also Head of Profession for Science. Ed volunteers as Chair of the Alliance for Data Science Professionals, which is establishing professional standards for the new profession of Data Scientist, and is an enthusiastic speaker and writer on mathematical topics. Ed holds Chartered Mathematician accreditation and is a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications. In 2024 he was runner up at the Women's Engineering Society's Male Ally of the Year Award.
