An Event with Navine G. Khan-Dossos and Professor Lisa Downing

For the past two years, Navine G. Khan-Dossos and Professor Lisa Downing have collaborated on a series of art exhibitions and events that explore their shared interest in questions of gender and “extremism”, and more recently in counter-terrorism strategies and freedom of expression, especially as they impact upon mental health. 

Navine's next exhibition, “There is No Alternative”, to debut in London in summer 2019 before touring Birmingham and other UK cities, is a co-creation that directly addresses the workings of the UK’s Prevent strategy.

The afternoon event with Navine will comprise an illustrated “conversazione” about the exhibitions Navine and Lisa have worked on together, from 2.00-2.45, followed by a short break, and then a panel debate including audience questions and discussion, from 3.00-4.30pm on the topic of: “Prevent: Gender, Wellbeing, Liberty”.

Participants, in addition to Lisa and Navine, will be: 

• Dr Katherine Brown, Senior Lecturer in Theology, an expert on radicalisation and women.
• Dr Katharina Karcher, Lecturer in Modern Languages, who works on feminist militant groups and “terrorism" in contemporary and historical contexts. 
• Dr Monica Lloyd, Senior Lecturer in Forensic Psychology, who provides consultancy to Prevent.
• Chris Ryder, PhD student in LCAHM, whose thesis examines manipulation of gender stereotypes in ISIS propaganda.
