A long caravan of travellers pick their way across the wide desolate plains of Central Asia in Borodin’s 'musical tableau' with sonorous strings and wistful winds evoking the music of the disparate cultures traversing its expanse. At the end of our journey, we find ourselves in a grand theatre where we find regal dances, magic and heartbreak in Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake before the orchestra fires up Ginastera’s Argentine-inspired dances from Estancia – toe-tappingly infectious and raucous - these are real showpieces. The string orchestra treats us to the deeply affecting Barber’s Adagio, Corelli’s spirited Concerto Grosso and Elgar’s sighing Sospiri, the perfect complement to a Sunday spring afternoon.

  • Borodin In the Steppes of Central Asia
  • Tchaikovsky Selections from Swan Lake
  • Ginastera Dances from Estancia, Op.8a
  • Corelli Concerto Grosso in F, Op.6, No.2
  • Barber Adagio for Strings, Op.11
  • Elgar Sospiri, Op.70
