Justice in Transitions

The inaugural ‘Justice in Transitions’ conference hosted by the Birmingham Law School brings together academics working in various fields who are interested in problems of justice within the transitional context.

Moving away from the central question of Transitional Justice – how best to address grave human rights violations that occurred during a conflict and subsequently restore the society – the conference instead probes into the core issues of the meaning and understanding of both ‘justice’ and ‘transition’ and their possible interaction. Apart from more general approaches, the conference also focuses on experiences of countries and regions such as Mexico, the former Yugoslavia, Ireland, UK, Myanmar and the Sudans.

The papers deal broadly with one of three topics: the concepts and paradigms of transitional justice; achieving justice within unconventional transitional settings; and the propensity of particular tools to achieve goals that may fall short of the conventional understanding of justice.
