Richard Vinen
On Wednesday 8 February (17.30-19.00), we’ll be joined by historian Richard Vinen, author of Second City: Birmingham and the Forging of Modern Britain (2022). Richard will be talking about ‘Conservative Birmingham’ and will be considering why Birmingham became (as The Times put it) 'an inviolate citadel of Conservatism' between the wars. In the talk he will also examine why and how Birmingham ceased to be such a citadel after 1945 and why Birmingham still plays such a role in the imagination of the Conservative Party now.
This event is free and will take place on the University of Birmingham’s Edgbaston campus (Arts Building, Lecture Room 7). It has been organised by the University’s Birmingham Research Institute for History and Cultures (BRIHC) in collaboration with the Centre for West Midlands History and Centre for Modern British Studies.
