The Department of African Studies and Anthropology has over 50 years’ experience and expertise in supporting students from all over the world, including Africa.
We integrate cutting-edge and world-leading research on Africa with distinctive inter-disciplinary teaching at the undergraduate and postgraduate level. Our staff are ready to share their expertise in anthropology, history, human geography, development, literature, media, popular culture and religion. This is how we create a warm and informal atmosphere for genuinely innovative learning. Our doctoral students join us from all over the world to produce pioneering new research on Africa, across the disciplines.
Our degree programmes treat Africa as a diverse and dynamic continent, and we combine specialist knowledge of particular regions with an acute awareness of Africa’s relationship to a globalising world. With us, you can learn about Africa’s long history of connections with Europe and the Islamic world, the formation and struggles of African diaspora communities in the Americas, the impact of new digital technologies on cultural and economic flows, and much more.
The department has particular strengths in social and cultural anthropology, and we put anthropology into dialogue with other academic disciplines and with developmental and humanitarian concerns.
