The School welcomes applications from individual researchers based outside the UK, who are interested in pursuing research and making links with the School, in any field of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences that corresponds with the School’s research interests.
Visiting Scholars may apply to join the School for a period of normally up to one year. During their stay they are attached to a research group that shares their research interests, but they do not register for a formal academic qualification.
Visiting Scholars are encouraged to attend and participate in the academic activities of the School. All activities are conducted in English and prospective Scholars should therefore have a good command of written and spoken English.
Visiting Scholars are usually asked to present a paper about their research to the School during their time in Birmingham.
Fees & Entitlements
Visiting Scholars are expected to be self-funding, as the position offers no financial remuneration from the University. In addition, services will be normally charged for as a “bench fee”, the level of which depends upon the length of stay of the Scholar and the purpose of their visit.
During their stay in Birmingham, Visiting Scholars are entitled to:
- University ID card, allowing access to all University staff and student facilities
- Full use of the University libraries and computing facilities
- Desk space within the School and use of the School’s research facilities (sole use of a desktop computer is not guaranteed)
- Opportunities to discuss research with staff in the School
- Advice on preparing papers for publication
- Attendance at all open seminars and public lectures in the University
Residential accommodation on the University campus is limited and applicants for Visiting Scholar status should not rely on its availability. However, the School can provide help and advice in finding alternative local accommodation.
Visiting Scholars are expected to make their own arrangements regarding visas / work permits, travel, insurance and health / vaccinations.
