Covers issues relating to the idea of the modern city as a planned environment. The course will trace three distinct phases in the construction of the 'modern city':
- The development of a free and humanist city
- The enlightenment introduction of 'reason' into the ways people thought about cities
- The nineteenth century capitalisation of the city
By the end of the module students should be able to:

- Discussion of complex and contradictory data sources
