This module will build on student’s previous fieldwork experience to enable them to undertake, in small groups, a field based research project. The projects will be student devised and lead, with guidance from their project advisor, and will draw upon both theoretical and methodological approaches gained from other modules. Prior to work in the field there will be a series of 5 seminars which will provide background to the field work location, introduce readings and other sources, and facilitate the development of project ideas. It is envisaged that students will spend 6 days in the field. The first will be guided by the module team and then five days will be spent on the project, with input from academics each day. Depending on student demand there will be three field work locations, one non-EU (such as Tokyo), one EU and Birmingham. The module is supported by University funds of £120,000 per annum, which will provide approximately £500 per student to contribute to travel and accommodation costs.
By the end of the module you will be able to:
- Demonstrate a high level of understanding of a key issue in their field work location
- Engage critically with and evaluate demanding readings drawn from diverse intellectual traditions.
- Identify and evaluate relevant grey literature and media sources.
- Demonstrate the effective use of a wide range of methodological approaches
- Produce a high level of analysis of a wide range of materials
- Effectively communicate complex ideas in writing.
