Sedimentary Basin Analysis

Yr3_Sedimentary Basin Analysis_JW (1) (1)

Sedimentary basin analysis investigates basin formation and controls on sedimentary fills. The module focuses on techniques, such as sequence stratigraphy, for unravelling sedimentary sequences in 4D and developing a thorough understanding of the inter-linked internal and external drivers of basin development and evolution.

The module includes a residential field course to south-east Spain, where there is an emphasis on the interpretation of the processes controlling the sedimentology of basin fills in a geologically young, tectonically active region. A key aspect of the module is the development of a high-level understanding of the interaction between tectonics, sedimentation, sea level and climate change, and exploring pertinent research developments in this field.

By the end of the module you will be able to:

  • Understand the tectonic context of a range of basin types
  • Construct, interpret, and critique lithostratigraphic and chronostratigraphic charts and correlations of sedimentary basin fills
  • Make geophysical correlations between wireline logs of sedimentary basin fills
  • Explain the differences in controls of siliciclastic, carbonate and mixed siliciclastic-carbonate basin fills
  • Undertake a sedimentary basin analysis project using either seismic data or palaeontological data to develop and explain a basin history
  • Undertake advanced level field analysis of sedimentary basin fills.

Assessment

  • Spain fieldwork - two on trip day exercises
  • Poster exercise on return
  • Basin analysis project linked to degree programme
