Your first year at Birmingham 

Your first year as a Civil Engineering student at the University of Birmingham will be an interesting and exciting time full of new experiences and challenges.

Here are a few of the highlights you can expect from your first year:

  • The first year provides a foundation of understanding across Civil, Mechanical and Electrical and Electronic Systems Engineering building global perspectives and kindles the passion necessary to address the societal challenge agenda.

  • Students get the opportunity to spend a week during their degree to work on site with friends, building a scale version of an iconic structure.

  • Students have access to the Departmental Industrial Placements Programme RESPECT, which provides the opportunity to interact with employers and gain valuable work experience

  • Access to advanced Civil Engineering labs equipped with modern testing equipment.  There is also substantial investment in new teaching spaces and a new engineering building , allowing more flexible and accessible ways of working.

  • We have a student led society CivSoc, who bring together all years of Civil Engineering by providing social events, sporting activities and industrial opportunities.

  • For students on our unique Civil and Railway Engineering programmes, there is also a RailSoc Society. As well as socials and behind-the-scenes trips to steam railways and more, RailSoc are very actively involved in industry events and in 2019 won the EPS Industrial Award for their work with various companies within the industry.

  • 26th January 2022 (6pm UK time) - Deadline for applications - First places*
  • 25th February 2022 - UCAS Extra opens
  • 19th May 2022 - Deadline for all universities to process all applications submitted by 26th January
  • 9th June 2022 - Deadline for applicants to make decisions (if all decisions received by 19th May)
  • 30th June 2022 - All applications made after this date are entered in to UCAS Clearing
  • 4th July 2022 - Last date to make a UCAS Extra application
  • 5th July 2022 - UCAS Clearing opens. Birmingham Clearing programmes will confirmed in due course
  • 14th July 2022 - Deadline for all universities to process all applications submitted by 30th June
  • 21st July 2022 - Deadline for applicants to make decisions (if all decisions received by 14th July)
  • July - Birmingham accommodation application deadline (for Accommodation Guarantee scheme)
  • 18th August 2022 - A level results day. If you're not an A level student, you must send us your results directly
  • 17th - 18th September - Arrivals Weekend
  • 19th September - Semester One begins with Welcome Week
  • 27th September  - Semester One teaching begins
  • 20th January 2023 - Semester One ends
  • 23rd - 27th January 2023 - UoBe Festival
  • 30th January 2023 - Semester Two begins
  • 23rd June 2023 - Semester Two ends

*All applications received by this date are given equal consideration. If you apply after this date then we cannot guarantee that we will be able to consider your application depending on the number and quality of applications we received before this UCAS deadline.
