Philosophy of Education is a branch of philosophy focusing on conceptual and normative questions raised by educational policy and practice. The Birmingham School of Education has a long tradition of work in this area and is currently home to one of the largest groups of philosophers of education in the UK.
The School’s philosophers are at the forefront of work in the field. Between them, they hold the editorships of Theory and Research in Education, Journal of Moral Education, Journal of Philosophy in Schools, the IMPACT pamphlet series and the Bloomsbury Philosophy of Education book series. Their publications have attracted significant media attention, resulting in national press coverage and appearances on television and radio.
The School hosts a philosophy of education research seminar series, co-sponsored by the Philosophy of Education Society of Great Britain. Doctoral applications from philosophers with an interest in education and educationalists with an interest in philosophy are warmly invited.
In addition to supervising doctoral research, philosophers in the School teach on the BA Education (Philosophy of Education, Ethics in Education and Children as Citizens).
