Research Topic

Childhood in the Camps: An ethnographic exploration of play and performance in refugee camps

Research Summary

My research project is looking to explore the role of performance and play intervention in refugee settlements.  I am asking the question; what does play, and performance do here?  To do this I am conducting ethnographic field research in collaboration with The Flying Seagull Project, a children’s circus and play charity, that specializes in play and performance for children living in marginalized communities. My field work will be conducted over the course of 18 months in Lebanon and Greece.

Although I am based in the School of Education, my research is influenced by several disciplines, including; theatre and arts studies, refugee and migration studies, critical pedagogies, psychoanalysis and psychotherapy, international relations, international development, geography and humanitarian aid.
