Education and Palestine Seminar 1: Setting the Context

This event is the first of 3 seminars on Education and Palestine in the School of Education. This first seminar will examine the current and historical context of education in Palestine

- Professor Ilan Pappé, Professor of History, Director of the European Centre for Palestine Studies, University of Exeter
Speakers Professor Giacaman, Dr Qato and Professor Pappé will critically explore questions of knowledge production under occupation, the history of education in Palestine, and the current possibility of education in the context of war and humanitarian emergency.
The event is open to all who register. It is a space to critically explore pressing issues for education in Palestine - as such, attendees need to be aware that sensitive and challenging issues will be discussed.
As is routine for University events, this will be a safe and respectful space for all in attendance, regardless of background, to hear from expert speakers and to pose appropriate questions.
Biographies
Professor Rita Giacaman
Rita Giacaman is a Professor of Public Health at the Institute of Community and Public Health, Birzeit University, occupied Palestinian territory and the founder of the Institute in 1978. Rita has chronicled the effects of Israeli military occupation, chronic war-like conditions and exposure to political violence on the physical and mental health of Palestinians. She is one of three coordinators and a Steering Group member of the Lancet Palestinian Health Alliance. Currently, she is also serving as a Commissioner for the Lancet Commission on Syria, and the Lancet Commission on Human Rights and Health.
Dr Mezna Qato
Mezna Qato is Margaret Anstee Centre Research Fellow at Newnham College, University of Cambridge. Her research and teaching interests centre on histories and theories of social, economic and political transformation amongst refugee and stateless communities, the politics and practice of archives, and global micro-histories of movements and collectivities in the Middle East. She currently completing a book on the history of education for Palestinians.
Professor Ilan Pappé
Ilan Pappé is Professor of History, Director of the European Centre for Palestine Studies, and Co-Director of the Exeter Centre for Ethno-Political Studies at University of Exeter. His research focuses on the modern Middle East and in particular the history of Israel and Palestine, and he has written multiple renowned books on these topics. He has also written on multiculturalism, critical discourse analysis and on power and knowledge.
