Flourishing Schools: Introducing The Character Teaching Inventory

A Conference for UK Teachers and School Leaders Interested in Character Education.

Welcoming teachers from across the country, this launch event is the culmination of recent research conducted by the Jubilee Centre for Character and Virtues on what works in character education, building on over a decade of academic work into how schools can best support pupils to flourish and thrive.

This day long event will showcase the Centre's most recent report, 'Teaching Character Education: What Works' which includes The Character Teaching Inventory.

Demonstrating how best to cultivate a community in which character can be caught, taught, and sought, The Character Teaching Inventory presents an essential guide for all those interested in character education.

The programme will include presentations from the Jubilee Centre research team, the Chair of the Association For Character Education (ACE) Gary Lewis and a panel session with some of the UK's most prominent school leaders:

• Chris Clyne - Principal, Northampton Academy
• Tony Bradshaw - Head Teacher, Colmore Junior School
• Herminder Channa OBE JP - Executive Principal, Ark Schools

There will also be a key note address from Professor Dame Alison Peacock, Chief Executive of the Chartered College of Teaching.

This event will end at between 15:00 and 15:30.

The Character Teaching Inventory presents 70 character education teaching strategies for schools to implement as part of their character education provision.

The Inventory is intended both for schools who have already begun their character education journey, and for those who are about to begin.

Based on Jubilee Centre research conducted with teachers and character education leaders, the Inventory includes multiple character-focussed approaches perceived to have had a positive impact on the character development of pupils. The draws upon the forthcoming research report, 'Teaching Character Education: What Works', to be published by the Jubilee Centre in July 2022 and has been designed as a practical tool to accompany the Centre’s 'A Framework for Character Education in Schools'.

The aim of the Inventory is to make the implicit aspects of character education – which are often already occurring in most schools – more explicit, whilst also providing schools with suggestions of new teaching strategies to use.
