A Taxonomy for Using Social Media as a Learning Tool: Updating Bloom's Taxonomy

The use of social media in the classroom is a key opportunity to increase learners' engagement, motivation, and promote their learning by providing students with various learning pathways. This process requires creating a specific framework to demonstrate how social media can be used as a tool in the learning process according to educational objectives.

This study aims to explore a standardised mechanism firstly to familiarise educators with how to activate social media platforms effectively as a learning tool; secondly to help them to understand how the platforms can be employed in the subjects they teach, and thirdly how to integrate social media resources with the learning environment. With a view to supporting these outcomes, a social media taxonomy was developed (Web 2.0) based on Bloom’s taxonomy (Web 1.0) to find an innovative and sustainable way to transform teaching and learning. The Web 2.0 taxonomy focuses on three dimensions named AS Consciousness, Cognition, and Creativity [3C], and each dimension consists of its categories in the metacognitive domain: Consciousness [viewing], Cognition [posting, interacting, and analysing], Creativity [assessing, and displaying]. The categories symbolise instructional objectives hierarchically ranging from lower-order thinking skills to higher-order thinking skills.

Biography

Mehmet DEMIR, Ph.D., is currently an International Research Fellow in the Department of Teacher Education, School of Education, University of Birmingham.

He earned his Ph.D. and Master’s degree in Education Sciences-Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Inonu, Turkey in 2015 and 2010 respectively. Prior to completing his Ph.D. he was a visiting scholar at the University of Pittsburgh in the School of Education’s Collaborative for Evaluation and Assessment Capacity (CEAC), PA, United States. He was actively involved in the data collection, analysis, and reporting of in many of the projects.

His research interests include curriculum evaluation, assessment on math, alternative assessment, and online alternative assessment through Social Media. In the past, Dr. Demir worked as a research assistant at Adiyaman University, Turkey. He also worked as a principal and assistant principal for two years and taught for five years at different elementary schools.
