by Bertolt Brecht. Translation by Alistair Beaton. Directed by Mollie Guilfoyle.
WAR! Easter Sunday and Death roams the streets of Grusinia. The Governor’s child, abandoned by its mother, is saved by a servant. Pursued by soldiers she travels over the mountains to escape, helped by some, betrayed by others. For two years she hides Michael as he grows. Then, when the war is over, the Governor’s wife reclaims the child and a judge, of dubious character, must decide who should have him, the birth mother (who has the legal right) or the woman who has given up everything to protect and love him. A Chalk Circle is drawn on the ground………… Physical theatre, Mask, Puppets and specially composed Music, bring Brecht’s last production to life - with 70 characters played by a cast of only 12!

About our productions
The Department of Drama and Theatre Arts is a leader in the integrated academic and practical study of drama, performance and theatre arts. Students gain first-hand experience using and testing the language of performance in a variety of specialist study and practical modules.
Each year the Department stages a season of plays closely tied to its academic and practical work. Productions are performed by third year undergraduates and supported in lighting, sound, design/costume and stage management by second and first year students. Plays are directed either by members of the Department or guest directors from the professional theatre. Productions will be staged in the departments own performance venue George Cadbury Hall.
