Students are an integral part of our team-based research and Dentistry has a very good set up with a fully integrated research space thus enabling all research to be undertaken under one roof. The Birmingham Dental Hospital and School which opened in 2016 is the first integrated, stand-alone dental hospital built in the UK for almost 40 years. It comprises a state of the art clinical, teaching and research facilities which totals 15,465m2 of floor space. The Dental School is part of the College of Medicine and Health which in total has over 1000 academic staff and researchers and attracts £60M new research funding per year; it represents a major international centre for biomedical research. The dental school has 650 m2 of state-of-the-art laboratories, including the necessary equipment for physical and biological material characterization.
The Graduate Research School allows students to receive a variety of training support, which encourages interaction. The Graduate School has contributed to a vibrant research culture where students are seen as part of the research team. Within our research theme areas, team-based research ensures that students are an integral part of the culture of the teams interacting with other team members on a daily basis and contributing to team research discussions within both informal lab and more formal meetings and seminars. We actively encourage student participation at a variety of national and international scientific meetings, including BSODR and IADR, as well as more specialist meetings where they can present their research alongside other established researcher’s within those teams.
