Business Development Manager at Capgemini

BSc Business Management (Year in Industry), 2018

I wanted to attend an institution which was well-established and had a strong reputation for its academic excellence, careers network and alumni community. Finding a Business Management degree which offered a year in industry was also important, having learnt the invaluable foundation it could provide a career with from previous internships.

The University of Birmingham ticked every aspect of this criteria in being a part of the Russell Group, and its exclusive relationships with corporations such as Jaguar Land Rover, Capgemini and Deloitte. Its Business School was ranked one of the UK’s the top 15, and also offered a beautiful campus as a part of the package which was a bonus! Birmingham was a clear differentiator from my other prospective choices, and I still confidently stand by that decision today.

What do you think of the learning experience at Birmingham?

As a student, I was very lucky to have access to such a wealth of facilities to support my academic journey which I can see the University is continually investing in. When I was applying for placement schemes, the Business School and Placement Team always went the extra mile to ensure I received support. This ranged from organising mock assessment centres, telephony interviews, reviewing my applications and just simply providing moral support during difficult times. As a member of the Russell Group, I particularly appreciated how the university’s lecturers were able to bring to life concepts discussed in class through their industry experience, latest research and different forms of teaching (e.g. group work, presentation, essay etc).

What university experiences did you benefit from outside of your course?

I participated in multiple programmes, societies and events during my time at Birmingham. These enabled me to explore my passions, grow my network with firms and meet some lovely people outside of my course! Finding treasures such as the University’s Botanical Garden (which is just around the corner from the Business School) was also much appreciated as a student, and provided a perfect way to rejuvenate myself during examination periods. I’d say a notable experience would be the Community Challenge, which is an exclusive programme the University collaboratively developed with Capgemini. Thanks to this opportunity, I secured an industrial placement and graduate job at Capgemini, and had my application fast tracked on both occasions to the final stage! Had it not been for the Community Challenge, I would not be where I am today.

How has your career developed since graduating from the University of Birmingham?

Since graduating with a First Class Honours, I’ve maintained a close relationship with the institution. Currently my career responsibilities include growing the business in the customer services space, building relationships with the customer and improving profitability by developing opportunities. Having strongly benefitted from the Community Challenge, I now help to organise the programme to try and help current students benefit in a similar way I did. I also occasionally speak at lectures and Offer Insight Days to students about my career journey and experience at Birmingham.

What are your fondest memories of the University?

Meeting some really wonderful people on my course that I am still in touch with, and hearing some of the funniest stories from my lecturers during class!

What advice would you give other students?

A wealth of opportunities are available at Birmingham ranging from those that will support your personal development, to equipping you with the skills to excel in industry. I’d strongly advise getting involved in as much as you can. If a placement year is available for your degree - Take it. It was without a doubt the highlight of my four years at Birmingham. It can provide you with such an invaluable insight of your potential career, and put you in a strong position to secure a graduate job! But most importantly, have fun and enjoy the experience!
