Working at HSBC in Jakarta, Indonesia
MSc International Economics, 2016
After I finished and submitted my dissertation in September 2016, I took some time to travel, visiting countries in the Baltic, Scandinavia and Southeast Asia for a while.
In November 2016 I started working at HSBC Indonesia in Jakarta as a Transaction Monitoring and Sanction Screening Manager for the Retail Banking & Wealth Management division.
Luckily, I’ve been able to keep in touch with former classmates since graduating. I even visited my classmate in her hometown of Kathmandu, Nepal, back in May 2017. We had a small reunion with some Nepali friends who all studied master’s degrees at the University of Birmingham and had a great time.
During my degree I was taught to understand detail and how different variables and concepts relate to each other. In my current role with HSBC, I am challenged to keep my eyes out for suspicious transactions to prevent money laundering and terrorism funding and then report these for further investigation. The attention to detail and analytical skills I learnt at Birmingham really help me with this.
“Thanks to the University, I’m connected to others from all over the world through education.”
