“The 2+2 Programme in the University of Birmingham was the starting point for all my dreams.”
Why did you decide to study Biosciences 2+2 at the University of Birmingham?
University of Birmingham has got an excellent academic reputation with the world-leading research, especially in bioscience areas. Personally I participated the 2+2 program because it is a great opportunity to gain the interenational experience, improve my English and enhance my competence in career development.
What is your personal highlight of studying at Birmingham?
I would like to highlight two points. The first one is the high quality of modules that the School of Biosciences has provided. These modules covered a broad spectrum of biological areas, ranging from the basic sciences to the cutting-edge techniques. The lecturers provided comprehensive handouts and references of not only the classic theories but also the most recent publications. This ensures the undergraduates to understand the freashest insights in biological/medical areas.
The second point is the Career Networks services. It is extremely helpful and convenient, especially when you are in the final year applying for a job or postgraduate study. The career advisors provided professional advice on career choice, CV, cover letter and interviews. These can equip an undergraduate or postgraduate with important transferable skills within and beyond science areas. Do take advantage of this free service and participate in the career events they organise!
How do you find living in Birmingham?
Birmingham is the second biggest city in UK. With convenient transport and economic prices, it is really friendly to live. I still missed some really good Chinese restaurants and the supermarket in the city centre. Birmingham is a city you will never get bored of.
What are the main differences between studying at the University of Birmingham and your university in China?
The tutorial system in the University of Birmingham is one of the major differences. This is a valuable resource to discuss your study concerns and seek for suggestions on personal development. I personally benefited a lot in PhD application and career planning from my tutor Prof Helen Cooper and final year project supervisor Prof Mark Viant.
What is your top tip for other students thinking of coming to study at Birmingham?
Sum up your courage, be confident to take the intiative, and be brave to embrace the success!
What are your aspirations for the future and how has studying abroad benefited you?
After my current PhD study with Prof Sir Walter Bodmer in University of Oxford, I am going to take the position as a life science specialist in a global consulting company. This experience will serve as an exciting starting point to combine my scientific expertise with business skills, and largely fulfil my interests in pharmaceutical and biotechnic industries.
My international study experience in Birmingham University is the foundation for my current development, as the multicultural environment largely broadened my outlook and built up my confidence. The 2+2 Programme in the University of Birmingham was the starting point for all my dreams.
