What is your current role?
I’m a Primary Care Contracts Manager working for Sandwell and West Birmingham Clinical Commissioning Group (SWBCCG).
A typical day doesn’t exist in my role. My job is largely project based, working with GP Practices to manage and develop contracts for the delivery of primary care. I’m on the phone a lot, discussing contractual issues with practices as they arise. Those issues can range from applications for Practice Mergers to removing violent patients from their registered list. One of the contracts I work closely with is the Extended Access Scheme – you may have noticed your GP now offers appointments from 18:30-20:00 and during the weekend, this is a result of this national contract.
I love the unpredictability of my job; I never know coming into work what the day will bring, and it really makes me appreciate the boring days where I can catch up on emails.
How has your Biomedical Science degree helped you in your current role?
Although I’m no longer working in a science (or data) field, my Medical Science degree continues to help me in my career. The critical thinking and analytical skills help me think problems through logically, coming to the best outcome for patients.
