Academic foundation programmes give foundation doctors the opportunity to develop research, teaching and leadership/management skills in addition to the basic competencies outlined in the curriculum.
Our programme allows trainees to attain a range of academic competencies whilst also achieving the clinical competencies required by the Curriculum for the Foundation Years in Postgraduate Education and Training and for full registration with the General Medical Council.
There is also a taught element covering some basic research skills. Academic posts are in specialties including Diabetes and Endocrinology, Nephrology, Emergency Medicine, Public Health, Metabolic Medicine, Trauma and Orthopaedics, Vascular Surgery, Psychiatry, Rheumatology, Paediatrics and General Practice.
At University of Birmingham the year one and year two programs are integrated into a two-year rotation. All rotations include other posts delivering high quality clinical service and training in acute medicine and surgery. Rotations provide every opportunity to explore research and/or medical education interests and a solid foundation for future clinical practice.
The programmes are suitable both for final year medical students who have made firm decisions to commit to an academic career and for those who wish to explore their potential for a career in medical research and/or education in their foundation programme prior to applying for specialty training.
