Dr Rebecca Drummond
Birmingham Fellow | Institute of Immunology and Immunotherapy and Institute of Microbiology and Infection
Where were you previously located?
- National Institutes of Health, USA (2014-2018)
- University of Aberdeen (2010-2014)
What attracted you to the University of Birmingham?
The strong interdisciplinary nature of the research occurring here, especially the links between the microbiology and immunology groups, as I am particularly interested in host-pathogen interactions and understanding how immune cells and microbes talk to each other.
What are you hoping to accomplish while in Birmingham?
I hope to make fundamental new insights into how fungal infections are controlled in different organs, exploring mechanisms of immunity that are unique in different sites and understand how we can use this information to develop very specific therapies for fungal infections.
What medical discovery are you hoping will be achieved in your lifetime?
I would like to see more immune-based therapies being used in medicine to treat infections or degenerative diseases that are increasingly specific for the problem in question, which will make modern medical interventions safer and more direct.
