Institute for Textual Scholarship and Electronic Editing

We believe that computer methods are now fundamental to every stage of the editorial process. We use digital tools to locate and view the original materials; to transcribe them into electronic form; to compare the texts and to analyse the patterns of variation; and we publish them electronically.

The Institute for Textual Scholarship and Electronic Editing is a centre for doctoral research and other teaching activities.
Staff at ITSEE supervise candidates for doctoral research (PhD) and the one-year MA by Research. Co-supervision arrangements mean that students also receive training and technical support with the electronic aspects of their research projects. ITSEE has been home to a large number of scholarship candidates during its history, including doctoral students on the AHRC Midlands3Cities and Midlands4Cities programme (co-supervised with colleagues at the University of Nottingham), as well as College of Arts and Law scholarship holders.
The University actively encourages research students from overseas, and there is a strong tradition of this in the Theology Department and ITSEE itself. Many of the recent PhD graduates from ITSEE have followed the Distance Learning pathway, which enables students to pursue their studies outside Birmingham through regular video-conferences and off-site access to the extensive electronic holdings of the University library, in addition to a residential fortnight in Birmingham each year.
For more details of current research, please see the staff page.
Members of ITSEE also contribute to teaching on taught Masters and Undergraduate programmes, and ITSEE has also contributed to the University's Foundation Academy and various summer school activities.
