Reflective Practice in Meeting the Needs of Learners with SLD/PMLD

This module introduces you to the needs of learners with Severe Learning Disabilities or Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (SLD/PMLD). It draws on a range of common psychological and learning theories and assesses their utility for practice in different settings.

You will be encouraged to use these theories to assess and understand the needs of learners with SLD/PMLD (e.g., communication, cognitive, medical needs). A key aim of the module is to equip you with the tools to develop evidence-based reflection on existing practices. In doing so, you will be encouraged to develop as a reflective practitioner, who deploys a range of practical, empirical, communicative and evaluative skills to improve your practice, and that of others.

This module will give you 20 credits at Postgraduate Masters Level/Level 7.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the module, you will be able to:

  • demonstrate coherent knowledge and systematic understanding of the needs of learners with SLD/ PMLD specifically in relation to reflecting on your own current practice
  • critically analyse and reflect on personally chosen aspects of assessing and /or meeting the needs of learners with SLD/ PMLD in your own setting
  • effectively synthesise a wide range of relevant sources to support evidence based reflection on aspects of your work with learners with SLD/ PMLD
  • critically reflect on a variety of research, theoretical and practical perspectives underpinning reflective practice in your own workplace.

Assessment

You will be assessed through a range of work, enabling you to demonstrate your knowledge, skills and understanding of the theory and practical application of the module material.

You will have one specific formative assessment (where you receive informal feedback, but it does not count towards your module grade) and two components of summative assessment (which are each graded).

Through this comprehensive range of assessment components, your professional and academic careers will be enhanced.
